Temperature, Season Ratings & Prices
These notes are for guidance only as at present there is no EC standard for temperature/season ratings. In general, the claims made by all Down Equipment manufactures, including Mountaineering Designs are very conservative and are based on extensive feedback from users since 1972. Down manufactures do not use a TOG rating, as this was introduced for synthetic continental quilts, and has therefore, got little relevance to camping at low level and at altitude. Temperature ratings are equally dubious and are affected by a variety of circumstances and situations:
- Individual metabolic rate - some people are cold sleepers, some appear not to feel the cold.
- Personal fitness level.
- Types of clothing to be slept in.
- Fatigue levels - how exhausted are you.
- Dietary intake
- Climate - altitude, wind conditions, temperature.
- Accomodation - bivvy, tent, snow hole, Bothy.
- Personal experience.
- Use of Thermal sleepmat.
If you are unsure which bag to choose and would like some further advice, then contact Dave Whitworth at Mountaineering Designs and he will be happy to listen to your requirements and suggest a recommendation to meet your expectations.
